Abortion Facts

Types of Abortion

Abortion Pill

  • The abortion pill, aka medication abortion,  is the use of the medications mifepristone and misoprostol
  • Mifepristone (RU486) is taken by mouth first and ends a pregnancy by blocking the action of the hormone progesterone that supports the pregnancy
  • Misoprostol is then taken by mouth,  to cause the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy

Surgical Abortion

There are different kinds of surgical abortions:

  • Suction aspiration,  also called suction curettage or vacuum aspiration abortion, is performed during the first 6 to 16 weeks gestation
  • Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is another type of procedure typically done in later weeks

The New Kid On The Block: Missed Period Pills

  • This is basically just a new term for the abortion pill or medication abortions
  • It is still the use of mifepristone and/or misoprostol (the same drugs as are used in the abortion pill regimen), but labeling them now as “missed period pills” or “later period pills”
